About the role
Reporting to the Procurement & Shipping Manager, we have an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented and commercially minded Shipping & Freight Specialist to join our Supply Chain team. The primary purpose of this role is to provide analytical, administrative and operational support across Asmuss shipping and freight activities, covering both international inbound freight and domestic transport networks. You will play a key role in improving freight visibility, managing shipping data, supporting cost control initiatives and ensuring the efficient movement of products across the Asmuss network.
You will be responsible for the following:
- International shipping ownership – managing quoting and booking processes for all Asmuss inbound freight.
- Domestic freight management – analysing domestic shipping activity, carrier rates, freight pricing and cost movements to improve visibility and control.
- Freight cost oversight – supporting invoice variance review, landed cost analysis and improved freight spend reporting.
- Carrier consolidation – supporting the consolidation of domestic freight carriers to improve buying leverage, reduce duplication, strengthen service consistency and simplify carrier management.
- Operational continuity – maintaining accurate freight data and shipment updates to support the Procurement and wider Asmuss team.
- Coordinating with freight forwarders, shipping lines, customs brokers, suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure freight movements and documentation are managed effectively.
- Preparing freight, supplier and cost reports to support business and procurement decision-making.
We are ideally looking for someone who has:
- A tertiary qualification in Supply Chain, Logistics, Procurement or related discipline
- Relevant New Zealand experience in logistics, shipping, transport, supply chain, procurement support or freight administration
- Experience in a steel, distribution, manufacturing, construction supply or industrial products environment would be advantageous
- Experience in international freight, domestic transport, shipping, logistics or similar supply chain support roles.
- Understanding of sea freight, domestic transport, import documentation, customs clearance, Incoterms and freight partner coordination.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and attention-to-detail skills
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, pivots, reporting and analysis of freight and cost data.
- Ability to analyse freight spend, landed costs, carrier performance, invoice variances and cost trends.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with internal teams, suppliers and freight partners
